Where can I eat?
Eating out can be tough when you’re trying to find somewhere that balances having dairy free options, and those options not all being plain salads!
Here are a few ‘tried and tested’ restaurant chains, where I have found alternate menus, lactose/dairy free options, and delicious alternatives.

Italian food is often the worst choice for us lacto/dairy free people out there. Italian chefs often love cooking with cream, cheese, butter…and let’s be honest, that’s what makes it so delish.
Zizzi’s, famous for delicious pasta and pizza dishes, do an ‘allergy menu’ which is really extensive! They do dairy free bases, cheese (incl. d-f mozerella!), desserts, and it’s very very delicious. It’s a tried and tested fave of mine, so I can recommend whole heartedly!
I love chicken and chips. Fact. But not all of the Nando’s menu is safe. Bizarrely some of their dishes where you would expect to find NO dairy, such as ‘Macho peas’ are not lactose free, where as their creamy tasting ‘slaw is safe!
Their website has a great function on the online menu, where you can filter it by dietary requirement. This can be done for lactose free, wheat free, gluten free and veggie, so it makes knowing what you can eat so much easier!
My staple is chicken thighs, chips and coleslaw…sometimes with a cheeky sangria 😉
Leon are well known for being a restaurant that promotes healthy food, which tastes divine but also packs a punch where good, wholesome-ness is concerned. In my experience, staff are more than happy to point out dairy free options to customers, and advise on what to avoid. They even have a range of dairy free chocolate!
Their website is less helpful than that of Nando’s, and, in the past when ordering take away, I have been caught out with a yoghurt dressing, or some cheese shavings, which means my husband gets to have seconds…
Still, a great one for eating in!
Mmm, Mexican food. The perfect food for lovers of cheese, sour creme, yoghurt … But can it go hand in hand with a dairy free diet? Answer: YES!
The Wahacca menu changes seasonally so always check that what you had before, doesn’t contain dairy now, but generally I have found them to be good at pointing out dairy free options, and up for swaps in burritos and enchiladas. My fave is the Sonora salad, always careful to double check!
